A Prayer about Heart Strength from Grace

It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace. Heb. 13:9
Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Prov. 4:23
My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways. Prov. 23:26
Dear heavenly Father, many of us have lost friends and family members to heart disease, of the congenital and life-choice varieties. We also have friends suffer heart attacks, both young and old alike. Some of us are have the stitches, stints and pacemakers attesting to our own heart surgery. So the theme of heart care is personal to us, and it’s certainly one of the ways we honor you.
However, what will it profit us if we eat only foods from Whole Foods, can still run an eight-minute mile at age sixty, have a cholesterol level of 125 and a resting heart rate of 59, and yet have hearts that are weak in grace? Indeed, physical training definitely has some value, but godliness has value for all things, for both this life and the life to come (1 Tim. 4:8). So it’s not only good, it’s essential that our hearts are strengthened by your grace.
Father, it was by grace you called us, brought us to life in Jesus, justified us and made us your beloved children. Now lead us to the gym, the training table, the sauna, the spa, the regimen which will cause our heart to grow stronger and stronger and stronger in your grace.
For surely the more our hearts are strengthened by your grace, the more they will beat for your glory, be healed of heartbreaks and heartaches, and have less room for idols. We’ll love you more, and love what you love more obviously and sacrificially. Life will be more about your kingdom and less about our fiefdoms.
As we grow in grace, we’ll repent quicker, forgive deeper, and love louder. We’ll throw more gospel parties and fewer pity parties. We won’t think less of ourselves; we’ll just think of ourselves less often. So this day begins (and continues), we humble ourselves in gratitude and surrender to your work in our lives, by grace alone to your glory alone. So very Amen we pray in the loving and faithful name of Jesus.
