Where would you go if you needed immediate help in making a life-changing decision? If time were short and the implications were overwhelming—-whom would you trust for information and support? If anyone comes to your mind as you consider this question, consider yourself blessed.

As Christians, we are called to be people to whom others can go for help, and we are called to go to people in need. Jesus’ Parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:29-37 concludes, “You go, and do likewise.” The emphasis on going comes from the condition of the man in the parable. He cannot go to the help he needs; the help must go to him.

Going to women facing urgent, life-changing decisions about unplanned pregnancies is the whole reason why ICU Mobile exists.

Informed Mission

Since 1973, more than 53 million babies have been aborted in the United States alone. Globally, one in five pregnancies will end in an abortion—-about 42 million babies every year. ICU Mobile executive director Michael Homula was almost one of these statistics. While his father was serving in the military overseas, Michael’s mother was raped at a work party in Cleveland, Ohio, and became pregnant.

She chose to carry her pregnancy to term and give up her child for adoption through Catholic Families and Charities. So Michael’s passion for the work of ICU Mobile flows from a profound gratitude for life. After almost 20 years of success in business and consulting, he became the ministry’s executive director in October 2010.

ICU Mobile (pronounced “I See You”) began from the vision and passion of Sylvia Slifko. After years of working for a crisis pregnancy center, Sylvia wanted to do more to reach out to women making decisions about their pregnancies. The majority of women who visited the pregnancy center had already made the decision to carry their pregnancy to term. Sylvia wanted to reach more undecided women. The plan became clear: establish and support a global fleet of mobile ultrasound vehicles that go to rather than wait for women.

Mission to Inform

ICU Mobile is non-judgmental, non-political, and non-coercive. They focus on providing free, holistic care to women so they can make a fully informed choice. Statistics show that more than 70 percent of women considering an abortion who see their baby on an ultrasound choose life. Even better, 86.9 percent of women considering an abortion who see their baby aboard an ICU Mobile choose life. Right now 15 mobiles have been deployed throughout the United States, with another 14 cities raising funds for their own units so they go to women and children in need.

Jesus did not only issue his commission to go into all the world to a few, devout followers. His challenge to “go and do likewise” was not just for the lawyer who tried to test him, but for all us who enjoy the blessings of his gospel.

So go to women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Go to children without access to a quality education. Go to ex-prisoners trying to find work. And go to spread financial literacy among those targeted by abusive lenders. Go to all who need hear the message of salvation. Jesus came to us and asks us to go to others.
