So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. James 2:12-13
Dear Lord Jesus, my heart is gladdened today with a fresh awareness of your multifaceted and endless mercy. You are, indeed, a most wonderful, merciful Savior.
Because of your finished work, I’m no longer afraid to die and face judgment. The perfect love of your cross has driven that paralyzing fear away. And I’m no longer afraid to live, either; for by your life and death, you did everythingnecessary, not just to reconcile us to God, but also to place us in his eternal favor, great delight and steadfast love. Mercy trumped judgment for us, once and for all!
Now, all day long, Lord Jesus—every minute of every day, you constantly show us mercy. You don’t give us what we deserve; but instead, you give us more patience, forbearance, and grace.
In the gospel you are incessantly speaking words of encouragement, hope, and kindness to us. Even when you have to correct us, you give us “life-giving rebukes;” not shame-inducing stares or guilt-inflicting glares. Mercy continually trumps judgment on our behalf.
Because you took the judgment I deserve, the law that used to condemn me now actually consoles me—as a path of beauty and wisdom. I no live under longer the law, but by the “law of liberty.” Because the gospel is true, I can now honestly say, “the law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul”—my soul.
Lord Jesus, your great and daily mercies sabotage the critical attitude I can easily “cop” towards those who disappoint or hurt me. Indeed, help me “speak and act” today as someone for whom the triumph of mercy over judgment is a present reality.
Grant me a thick skin and a big heart, for extending your great mercy to others—especially in provoking contexts and difficult relationships. May I fear being cold hearted, more than I fear being exploited. So very Amen I pray, in your loving and strong name.
