In This Disillusioning Disheartening Election Year

Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the sevenfold Spirit before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. Rev. 1:4-5

Glorious Triune God, the more I ponder the American political process—especially this particular election year, the more I find a pool of irritation and a cesspool of cynicism brewing in my heart. I need an attitude adjustment and perspective alignment, big time. Thus, I’m counting on everything affirmed in this glorious passage to be true. I want your Word, not any political poll or pundit, to capture my imagination today, and in the weeks to come.

Sovereign Father, you always have been, you presently are, and you always will be the God who is working all things together after the counsel of your will. You never need a holiday; you never suffer a “senior moment”; and you always bring your “A game.” You are constantly lavishing “grace and peace” on your children; and I need fresh portion of both right now.

God the Holy Spirit, in your seven-fold perfection, you are constantly executing our Father’s will: From feeding sparrows and clothing flowers, to enthroning kings and dethroning other kings. You don’t “try” to do anything; you succeed at everything.

Lord Jesus, you are the “faithful witness” who reveals everything we need to know about anything we need to know. You are the “firstborn from among the dead.” Because you were raised, all who trust in you will be raised, and the entire cosmos will be restored and brought to a grandeur of which the Garden of Eden was just a hint. That Day looks better than ever.

And, (Hallelujah!) you are presently, and forever, “the ruler of the kings of the earth.” Our Father has left nothing to chance, but all things to you. Forgive my pining and whining, fretting and spewing of late. Knowing you, and trusting you, should free my heart from all panic and paranoia, but also from all passivity and presumption.

Show me (and us) how to live as good citizens of heaven and this world. I long for your kingdom to come, and your will to be done, on earth as it is in heaven. So very Amen, I pray in your glorious and gracious name.
