Gratitude for the Last Command in the Bible

The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.  Rev. 22:17

Dear heavenly Father, of all the commands with which you could have ended the Bible, I’m thankful for the one you chose. Instead of “Do more; try harder”, you went with, “Come, thirsty ones! Come, desiring ones! Come and take the free gift of the water of life.” What a generous, caring, and loving God you are. I am thirsty, I do wish to come, and I do so right now.

From the day you first convinced me of my need of Jesus and gave me gave me faith to trust him, I’ve had an unquenchable thirst for the water of life—the living water Jesus alone can give, the artesian spring of healing grace, the life-giving libation of your mercy and love.

Fortunately, the bitter waters of sin and self-righteousness only made me sick. The deceiving waters of my broken cisterns only bring me temporary relief. The illusionary waters of countless mirages proved to be just that—empty illusions, dry holes in the ground, all promise and no delivery.

So once again, I bring my thirst to you. I’m thirsty to know Jesus better and better. I’m thirsty to be filled with the Holy Spirit afresh. I’m thirsty to be quicker in my repentances and slower in my excuses. I’m thirsty to be more generous with forgiveness and less likely to take offense. I’m thirsty to be freer to love others as Jesus loves me. Father, slake these thirsts, by the refreshing waters of the everlasting gospel.

I’m thirsty for life in the new heaven and new earth. I’m thirsty for the wedding feast of the Lamb, when the bride will no longer say, “Come!” but will say, “We are here, all of us!” I’m thirsty for the Day when God’s glory will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. I’m thirsty for the Day of wiped tears and full joy. I’m thirsty for the Day of no more thirst. So very Amen I pray, in the fullness and faithfulness of Jesus’ name.
