A Monday Loaded with the Joys of a Friday

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Col. 3:23-24

Heavenly Father, I’m not sure when Mondays got tabbed as day to dread or bemoan, but Mondays are just as surely “the day you have made,” as Fridays. We come before you on this Monday not lamenting the beginning of a workweek, but rejoicing in the privilege of a worship week.

For you are just as present (and engaged) in laboratories and libraries, health care and art studios, floral shops and pharmacies, the financial sector and food trucks, homemaking and highway building, as you are in our gatherings for corporate worship.

So help us live today at the pace of grace and by the rhythms of the gospel—no matter our calling. Father, help us see our work less as a job and more as a vocation—less as a way of just paying the bills or preparing for retirement, and more as a means of expanding your kingdom and revealing your beauty. Whatever you’ve given us to do, may we do it as unto you—both the momentous and the mundane things.

By the power of the gospel, may we not obsess about our place on the “org chart.” Rather, free us to view and value our co-workers as fellow image bearers of God—like us, in need of your daily mercies and grace-riches.

Father, grant us quick repentances when we get frustrated; mercy and grace for people who annoy and disappoint us; and great joy in knowing that it’s not mere men, but the Lord Jesus we are serving. Help us to be the chief encouragers, the best listeners, and the most trust-worthy workers—wherever you’ve placed us. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ wonderful and merciful name
