In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye, like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft. The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him. He made him ride on the heights of the land and fed him with the fruit of the fields. He nourished him with honey from the rock. Deut. 32:11-13 NIV

Heavenly Father, during supper last night, I watched eagles swooping around my friend’s home like flying puppies at play, but with the precision of laser guided missiles. Such is the backyard birdlife of those who live in Alaska—astonishing, beautiful, and breathtaking.

It reminded one of several passages in your Word where eagles are used as a metaphor of your greatness and grace—especially this passage in Deuteronomy. The way eagles care for their young is just a hint, whisper, and taste of the way you care for us, your beloved children.

Thank you for coming to us in the barrenness of our brokenness and the howling wastelands of our sin. Thank you for shielding us and caring for us, for guarding us as the apple of your eye and hovering over us, as an eagle does her young. Thank you for stirring our nest—(redemptively messing with us), that we might learn how to fly—as scary is growth is.

You carry us to the heights of your everlasting grace—where we learn to soar, and you feed us with the manna of your daily mercies. You constantly nourish us, not with honey from any ordinary rock, but from the Rock of Ages. Indeed, the gospel is our Exodus and Jesus is our Promised Land.

Father, forgive us when we forget your faithfulness, doubt your nearness, and disregard your kindness. Forgive us for relying on our insufficient selves; gods that cannot save us, and idols that do not love us. All we need is Jesus and what you choose to give us. Thank you for being so generous, caring, and good. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ tender and triumphant name.
