Remembering Jesus–the Ultimate Serviceman

Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords. Rev. 19:11-16 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, it’s Memorial Day in our country—the day we set aside to honor the American servicemen who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. We don’t take our national freedom lightly, or for granted. Indeed, we are currently living in a day of “wars and rumors of wars”—a season which sends our hearts heavenward for hope.

Indeed, there’s a greater and lasting freedom we don’t take for granted on this Memorial Day—our spiritual freedom. This vision from the Apostle John stirs our hearts to remember that you, Lord Jesus, are the ultimate Serviceman—the one who gave his life to win our eternal freedom over sin and death. And one Day, you will put an end to all wars, meanness, and madness. We praise, bless and adore you.

Having crushed the prince of darkness on the cross, you’re now the resurrected rider on the white horse in John’s vision—alone worthy of the name Faithful and True and Word of God. You are Faithful to fulfill every promise God made for the salvation of his people, and the restoration of his broken world. And you’re not only True, but the Way, Truth, and Life for us—incarnate Word of God, Perfect Savior, Glorious Bridegroom. We worship you, Lord.

No one else is worthy of the title, “King of all kings and Lord of all lords.” This very moment, you are the ruler of the kings of the earth—all of them. Faith, not fear; peace, not worry; international mission, not ingrown nationalism, are the order of this day. Your kingdom has already come in part and will come in fullness at your return. Hasten that Day, Lord; hasten it. So very Amen we pray, in your triumphant and exalted name.
