I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint. Jer. 31:25
Lord Jesus, like hungry puppies, we’re poised to drink in the promise of your loving heart. Come and nourish us with the daily-ness of your mercies and the riches of your grace.
It’s heartening to know that we don’t have to feel guilty, feign strength, or make excuses in your presence. You meet as a loving Savior, not as a disgruntled coach. You meet us with the gospel, not with a scorecard; with a smile, not with a scowl; with encouragement, not disgruntlement. Hallelujah, what a kind and welcoming Bridegroom you are.
Why do we feel weary and faint? Where do we start? The demands and delights of relationships; too many guns in the hands of too many people; rancor in Washington and hackings on our computers; cancer in our friends and heartaches in our breasts; the normal process of aching bodies and the ill-timed moments of things breaking; Christians that can’t get along and friends that simply move on; transitions in our vocations and the overdue need for a vacation.
Jesus, we so look forward to an eternity of no more hurrying and busyness; no more hurt feelings or fragile egos; no more communicating in part or conflicting to win; no more need to either receive or give forgiveness; no more dying or death in any form; no more knowing you in part, beholding only a little of your beauty, or loving you with a divided heart.
Indeed, Lord Jesus, there’s no lasting refreshment apart from you. You still cry out in a loud voice for the thirsty ones to come to you and drink. You still call to the weary and heavy laden to come to you for rest. Settle and center our hearts today with the good news—the fresh news of the gospel. Not for a month, or a week, but just for this one day, help us to rest in your love and share it with others. So very Amen we pray, in your mighty and merciful name.
