The Total Solar Eclipse, International Anguish, and Jesus’ Return

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.” Luke 21:25-27 NIV

Lord Jesus, with over a million-extra people in town, we in Nashville are “pumped” to experience the total solar eclipse today about 1:28 pm CT. Many schools are out, animals will be weirded out, and we’ll all don our protective eye-wear as we take in this once-in-a-lifetime event. It should be pretty “cool.” Quite literally, because the temperature might drop about 20 degrees, I’m told.

All this solar hubbub reminded me about some of the things you told your disciples, when they inquired about the Day of your return. Signs in the sky, international anguish, terror abounding… quite honestly, Lord Jesus, I’d love for you to come back in my lifetime—even really soon. Multiple events, storylines, and personalities have fueled our longing for you to come back and finish making all things new.

Not as escapists, but as those primed and poised for life in the new heaven and new earth, we long to see you, be with you, and be like you, Lord Jesus. We are SO ready for no more terror or even temper tantrums, no more hostilities or even inhospitality; no more mourning or mornings when we wake up with fears, lack, and grief.

We crave the Day of no more cancers or even a need for Band-Aids, no more Alzheimer’s disease or even forgetting where we parked our cars; no more death in any way, shape, or form. We cannot wait for an eternity of every-nation peace and sinless everything—the Day when we’ll see and savor the fullness of your glory and beauty, and power and grace forever.

Whether that Day is hours or millennia away, we know you are joyfully busy redeeming your Bride from the nations, and sovereignly orchestrating all things to best serve the perfections of your plan. Grant us patience; supersize our love for our neighbors; and use us to offer our cities the first-fruits of the City that is surely coming. So very Amen we pray, in your tender and triumphant name.
