Rejoicing in the Greatness, Goodness, and “God-ness” of God

1 Chronicles 29:11– Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth, is yours.

Heavenly Father… wow, how this passage rescues us from our meager, me-centered thoughts of you. Everything is yours, Father—all things come from you, are sustained by you, and exist for your glory (Rom. 11:36). You’ve left nothing to chance, but all things to Christ.

Greatness” has its truest meaning when used in reference to you. And the “power” you displayed in creation and redemption is the “gold standard” of all power. “Victory” is no mere sporting category in your Story. It’s the grand declaration of Jesus’ triumph over sin and death, evil and the evil one. Indeed, all majesty and glory belong to you, Lord.

Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.

Your kingdom reign in Eden was a hint, whisper, and foretaste of the eternal Kingdom we’ll enjoy in the new heavens and new earth (Rev. 21:1-22:6). Events of late have intensified our longings for Jesus to return, and put all things right and make all things new. Every other reign is a fiefdom of futility, and all other kings are momentary monarchs. We extol and exalt you, on this Wednesday in September.

12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all.

What do we have that we haven’t received from you, Father? No “riches” compare to what you’ve given to us in Christ—who is our righteousness and peace, our strength and our life. There is no greater “honor” than to be your daughters and sons. We are so thankful that providence rules—not chance or coincidence, circumstance or happenstance. You are the Lord of our laughter and tears, hurricanes and hiccups, and everything else.

In your hand are power and might, and in your hand, it is to make great and to give strength to all.

Yes, Father, all things are in your hand. And in your heart, reside joy and generosity, immeasurable grace and irrepressible love for your children. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ tender and triumphant name.
