If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36 (NIV)

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Gal. 5:1 (ESV)

Lord Jesus, we’re free, but still not nearly as free as you intend. You’ve already freed us from the arrogance of thinking we can earn a relationship with you by our works, or gain more of your love by our efforts. Thank you!

Because your cross was our Judgment Day, we’re not afraid of death; and because you are our righteousness, we’re quicker to own brokenness and boast in our weaknesses. BUT we remain babes and rookies in so many other gospel freedoms.

Jesus, please free us to love your will and glory a gazillion times more than our druthers and comfort. May we obey you with zero delay or self-interest, resist temptation quicker than a bear eats honey, and always be the first to apologize and seek forgiveness.

Free us to humble ourselves and live as servants in our marriages and parenting, friendships and vocations. Help us use fewer words, explanations, and excuses, when engaging others in conflict. Fill us with so much of your joy, peace, and contentment, we won’t be easily shaken by unexpected changes, challenging circumstances, or irritating people.

Help us be present and engaged in the current moment and conversation. Make our “to love lists” longer and more important than our “to do lists.” Help us make better eye contact and heart connection with all kinds of people—those who are easy to be with and those we’d prefer to avoid. May our words and body language demonstrate a fluency in the language of grace and the dialect of encouragement.

Jesus, liberate us from thinking too much about what we’re not by showing us more of you and who we are in you. Help us worry less and worship more. Free us for greater spontaneity and louder laughter, saltier tears and quicker repentances. So very Amen we pray, in your most tender and powerful name.
