Redemptive Presence and Holy-Grit

“Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes. Stop being angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper—it only leads to harm… Soon the wicked will disappear. Though you look for them, they will be gone.” Psalm 37:7-8, 10.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the admonitions and promises of this portion of your Word. It’s hard not to fret. It’s hard not to feel rage when one group of your image-bearers claim supremacy over others. When “bad traffic” has nothing to do with driving to work, but with selling women and children for sex. When the wealthy can buy probation and the weak are buried in prison.

When women are muted and abusers go free; when pornography is considered free speech, pharmacy companies fuel addictions, and lying is considered just “doing politics.” How do we explain this stuff to our kids and grandkids?

We want to call down fire, but Jesus bids us call down grace. Vengeance belongs to you; hope belongs to us. May your Kingdom come, and your will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven—soon, and very soon.

Father, show us what loving mercy, doing justice, and walking humbly with you require of us. Passivity and indifference are sin, so teach us how to offer redemptive presence and holy-grit. Replace our frets with faith, our worry with worship, and our growing cynicism with living hope. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ triumphant and grace-full name.
