“Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.”
– Jesus to the disciples and the crowds (Luke 12:48)

God’s blessings always bring responsibility and the fulfillment of that responsibility always brings God’s blessing. Jesus taught that the one who has received much is the one of whom God will require much. God gives freely to us so that we can give freely to others. It is a principle found all throughout Scripture. Wealth and blessing are not just given to us by God; they are entrusted to us by God. No one has the right to live for himself alone. The blessings we receive are designed by God to be used for blessing others.

America is one of the most blest nations in history. God has poured out both spiritual and material blessings on our country and people. Yet with this blessing comes tremendous responsibility. God expects more from us Americans because He has indeed entrusted more to us. In the parable that Jesus tells just before this quote, there is a picture of certain ruin for the servant that does not use wisely what has been entrusted to him by his master. As a country, America will be judged if the blessing that God has given us is not used for the benefit of others.

Realizing that we are blessed does not give us the freedom to wield our blessing like a sword. This type of behavior is a blatant misuse of God’s gifts and will most definitely bring judgment. God has given us His grace, and He expects us to show His grace to others. God has given us His riches, and He expects us to give back to Him and to others. God has given us freedom, and He expects us to extend that freedom to others. May we be responsible stewards of the blessing of freedom.
