“Christianity is NOT a religion; it is the proclamation of the end of religion. Religion is a human activity dedicated to the job of reconciling God to humanity and humanity to itself. The Gospel, however – the Good News of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is the astonishing announcement that God has done the whole work of reconciliation without a scrap of human assistance. It is the bizarre proclamation that religion is over – period.”

  1. Beyond Words says:

I would agree up to the point of “reconciling humanity to itself.” I think that’s our spirit-led and equipped calling as we make disciples and build community in Christ. We can’t do it in our unredeemed condition, but we are empowered when we receive Christ. And I get weary of gospel definitions that seem to imply we are catatonic in the thrall of grace.

  2. leonard Mullins says:

This the problem exactly-Capon needs to clarify to his readers- the 5oo lb elephant,on the other side of the see-saw- that cannot be ignored. “There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus…..(defined) who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit” Non-catatonic.
