Beth MooreName: Wanda Elizabeth “Beth” Moore

Why you’ve heard of her: She is a teacher and an author of best-selling Bible studies and books for women.

Position: Founder and speaker at Living Proof Ministries

Previous: Sunday School teacher, speaker at area luncheons and retreats, Mother’s Day Out worker, and Christian aerobics teacher

Education: Degree in political science from Southwest Texas State University (Texas State University at San Marcos), honorary doctorate in humanities from Howard Payne University

Books: Moore has written numerous best-selling books and Bible studies, including So Long Insecurity: You’ve Been a Bad Friend to Us, Breaking Free, Believing God, The Patriarchs and most recently, Sacred Secrets.

Why she’s important: After surrendering her life to ministry at the age of 18, she attended college, married and started a family — still unaware of how God might use her. Teaching Sunday School and speaking at small gatherings in her area, Moore began to develop a desire to grow in her knowing of Scripture. A Bible doctrine class sparked in her a passion for understanding and teaching God’s Word.

She began a weekly Bible study that grew to 2,000 people and led her to found Living Proof Ministries with a purpose of “teaching women how to love and live on God’s Word.” Living Proof conferences have taken her before hundreds of thousands of people in all 50 states and dozens of countries. Millions have read her books and participated in her small group curriculum.

Notable quotes:

“Jesus alone can change us from the core.”

“What I thought as a young adult is you act like you have it together whether or not you do because that is what church people do. That is not what God has called us to do.”

“You cannot amputate your history from your destiny, because that is redemption.”

“God surpasses our dreams when we reach past our personal plans and agenda to grab the hand of Christ and walk the path he chose for us. He is obligated to keep us dissatisfied until we come to him and his plan for complete satisfaction.”

“True intimacy with God always brings humility.”

“If Jesus gives us a task or assigns us to a difficult season, every ounce of our experience is meant for our instruction and completion if only we’ll let Him finish the work. I fear, however, that we are so attention-deficit that we settle for bearable when beauty is just around the corner.”
