wordmattersI’m a podcast nut. I listen while I’m getting ready for work in the morning, or when I’m driving somewhere, or when I’m out walking.

I’ve always loved radio for the way sounds and voices stir up my imagination, and downloading podcasts has become “the radio” for me – a way of diving into one of my favorite methods of communication and learning “on the go.” (Here is a list of some of my favorite podcasts.)

But now, I’m not only listening; I’m also broadcasting!

Brandon Smith and I have launched a new podcast called Word MattersEach episode takes a contested or puzzling passage of the Bible, walks through the most common interpretations, and then recommends how to preach or teach the passage effectively. The podcast is sponsored by the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB), and we are joined by a number of scholars and pastors to help us wrestle with some of the harder texts of Scripture.

The first three episodes are currently available:

  1. Did early Christians practice baptism for the dead? (1 Corinthians 15)
  2. Does Jesus prohibit oath-taking? (Matthew 5)
  3. Was Jesus Created? (Colossians 1)

More episodes are on the way, including texts referring to the historical Adam, why Jesus says we are to “hate” our fathers and mothers, carrying swords for self-defense, and Old Testament prohibitions of mixed cloths and shellfish. We hope to release two or three new episodes a month.

If you are interested in Word Matters, please subscribe to the podcast either through the website or on iTunes. You can follow the podcast on Twitter here. It would also help us if you left a rating and review. Hope you enjoy the banter and benefit from the insight!
